Over the past decade, the MVP award has almost exclusively gone to quarterbacks. That trend doesn’t seem to be shifting entering this season either, with quarterbacks occupying nine of the top ten spots on the odds board. This includes last year’s MVP, Lamar Jackson, who is currently second on the odds board behind a red-hot Josh Allen.
With the regular season coming to a close, this race will start garnering even more intense debate on every football podcast. You can check out the up-to-date odds below and start planning NFL futures for the 2024-25 season.

Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills): Allen finished 5th in MVP voting last year. However, much like Mahomes, the Bills signal-caller finished the season with a career-high in interceptions with 18. He also finished with 29 touchdown passes, the lowest total he’s produced since 2019.
Some of those numbers could be partially blamed on the Bills' offensive dysfunction early in 2023. Since Joe Brady took over, Allen has looked more comfortable on offense. In week 14 and 15 alone, Allen had five passing and five rushing touchdowns. Heading into week 17, Allen has 3,549 passing yards, 26 touchdown passes, six interceptions, and 11 rushing touchdowns.
Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens): After starting the season 0-2, Lamar Jackson has his team sitting with an 11-5 record. Jackson has not only been torching defenses through the air but he's also running all over opposing defenses. Following a win over the Texans in which he threw two touchdown passes, Jackson has 3,955 passing yards, 39 passing touchdowns, and four rushing touchdowns.
Saquon Barkley (Philadelphia Eagles): One of the bigger stories this offseason was the Giants' decision to let Saquon Barkley walk. Well, not only did he leave New York, but he promptly joined the Eagles and has since looked like the best running back in football. After another jaw-dropping performance against the Commanders, Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 rushing yards. Barkley has also found the end zone 13 times on the ground and twice through the air.

2018 | Patrick Mahomes | Quarterback | Kansas City Chiefs |
2017 | Tom Brady | Quarterback | New England Patriots |

The last time a player who did not play quarterback won the MVP was in 2012, when Adrian Peterson won it after he rushed for over 2,000 yards.
Only two defensive players have won the award since 1957, with Lawrence Taylor being the most recent in 1986.
Winning multiple MVPs is more than possible, as Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson have all won at least two in the past ten years.
A quarterback does not just have to lead the league in touchdowns to win the award, as Dak Prescott had more TDs and yards than Lamar Jackson in 2023.
