It’s been quite some time since the Detroit Tigers had a bonafide ace leading their rotation, and not only did they have one in 2024, but they also had the Cy Young winner in Tarik Skubal. Meanwhile, in the NL, the Braves have had their fair share of premier arms, but Chris Sale became the first since 1998 to win the award.
While Skubal remains the slight favorite to repeat as the CY Young, due to injuries, a second consecutive CY Young won't be in the cards for Chris Sale, as Paul Skenes has started to run away with it. To stay current on the latest movements in the AL and NL Cy Young race, follow the odds from all of the top Pennsylvania sports betting apps below.

Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers): Fresh off his first career Cy Young, Skubal unsurprisingly opened as the favorite to repeat in 2025. The Tigers as a franchise are on the up-and-up, which can largely be attributed to their young starting rotation, headlined by the lefty. In 2024, Skubal went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA, 228 strikeouts, and a 2.49 FIP. Coming off another outing in which he racked up double-digit strikeouts, Skubal is pitching to a 2.28 ERA and 2.26 FIP with 212 strikeouts over 166 innings.
Garrett Crochet (Boston Red Sox): In 26 starts this season, the Boston Red Sox ace has only allowed more than two runs in four of those outings. Coming off a start in which he allowed one earned run over seven innings against the Yankees, while also striking out 11, Crochet has a 2.38 ERA, 2.58 FIP, and 207 strikeouts in 166.1 innings of work.
Hunter Brown (Houston Astros): Developing pitchers has become a specialty of the Houston Astros organization, and Hunter Brown is the latest example. The Wayne State product is pitching to a 2.36 ERA and 3.09 xFIP over 149 innings of work. Brown is also on pace to break his previous career high in strikeouts, as he has 170 on the year.

Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates): Skenes did not open last season in the big leagues, but he still managed to win the NL Rookie of the Year and finish third in Cy Young voting. Up to this point of the 2025 season, Skenes has racked up 181 strikeouts and is pitching to a 2.40 FIP over 161 innings. In his most recent outing, Skenes worked seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts, which, by lowering his ERA to 2.07, has essentially locked up this award.
Cristopher Sanchez (Philadelphia Phillies): Although he was not officially announced as an All-Star, much to the dismay of his teammates, the Phillies are still paying Sanchez the bonus he would have received if he had made the All-Star team, as his numbers speak for themselves. Despite allowing five earned runs and failing to complete six innings in his most recent outing, Sanchez is still pitching to a 2.66 ERA, 2.65 FIP, and 2.89 xFIP with 173 strikeouts in 162.1 innings.
Matthew Boyd (Chicago Cubs): The Cubs have been mostly inconsistent since the All-Star break, but one of the silver linings for the team has been the resurgence of Matthew Boyd. Even with four earned runs allowed over 5.1 innings in his last start, the lefty is boasting a 2.61 ERA and 3.29 FIP in 148 innings.

After having a pitcher win the award six times from 1990 to 1998, the Atlanta Braves did not have another Cy Young winner until Chris Sale in 2024.
Prior to 2011, the Detroit Tigers had only two Cy Young winners. Since then, they have had three, including Tarik Skubal in 2024.
Over the past five years, only one Cy Young winner has gone on to pitch in and win the World Series. That player was Justin Verlander for the Astros in 2022.
A player has won the Cy Young award in consecutive seasons 13 times. Tom Glavine and Randy Johnson have both won it four straight years.
