It’s been quite some time since the Detroit Tigers had a bonafide ace leading their rotation, and not only did they have one in 2024, they had the Cy Young winner in Tarik Skubal. Meanwhile, in the NL, the Braves have had their fair share of premier arms, but Chris Sale became the first since 1998 to win the award. Now that the 2024 winners have been announced, baseball fans can start planning which arms they want to back for the 2025 season. With the odds for the 2025 season starting to be released, Spring Training is officially around the corner.

Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers): Fresh off his first career Cy Young, Skubal unsurprisingly opened as the favorite to repeat in 2025. The Tigers as a franchise are on the up and up, which can largely be accredited to their young starting rotation headlined by the lefty. In 2024, Skubal went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA, 228 strikeouts, and a 2.49 FIP, so if he can come close to replicating those numbers, it will be hard for AL pitchers to knock him off the throne.
Garrett Crochet (Boston Red Sox): One of the bigger moves this offseason saw Garrett Crochet trade in his white socks for red ones, as he is set to lead the Boston rotation in 2025. The lefty was the lone bright spot in Chicago last season, and now with some run support behind him, he could post an even better end-of-season stat line. In his first full season as a starter last year, Crochet pitched to a 3.58 ERA with 209 strikeouts and a 2.69 FIP.
Cole Ragans (Kansas City Royals): Outside of drafting Bobby Witt Jr, trading for Cole Ragans was one of the best decisions the Royals franchise has made over the past few years. The young left-hander showed flashes of ace potential in 2023, and in 2024, he proved that could be a reality, as he finished the season with a 3.14 ERA, 2.99 FIP, and 223 strikeouts in 186.1 innings.

Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates): Skenes did not open last season in the big leagues, but he still managed to win NL Rookie of the Year and finish third in Cy Young voting. The LSU product has the potential to be one of the best pitchers we've seen, and baseball fans are chomping at the bit to see what he can do in his first full season. In 133 innings in 2024, Skenes finished with a 1.96 ERA, 2.44 FIP, and 170 strikeouts.
Zack Wheeler (Philadelphia Phillies): In five seasons with the Phillies, Zack Wheeler has finished second in Cy Young voting twice, including last season. Not only did the veteran righty lead the MLB in WHIP and Hits per 9, but he pitched to a career-best 2.57 ERA along with 224 punchouts in 200 innings of work.
Chris Sale (Atlanta Braves): Sale has been a premier starter in the MLB for almost a decade, yet 2024 was the first time he ever claimed a Cy Young award. In his first season with the Braves, the veteran lefty went 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA, 2.09 FIP, and 225 strikeouts in 177.2 innings. With his health seemingly back in order, Sale certainly has a chance to challenge the young flamethrower in Pittsburgh all season.

After having a pitcher win the award six times from 1990 to 1998, the Atlanta Braves did not have another Cy Young winner until Chris Sale in 2024.
Prior to 2011, the Detroit Tigers had only two Cy Young winners. Since then, they have had three, including Tarik Skubal in 2024.
Over the past five years, only one Cy Young winner has gone on to pitch in and win the World Series. That player was Justin Verlander for the Astros in 2022.
A player has won the Cy Young award in consecutive seasons 13 times. Tom Glavine and Randy Johnson have both won it four straight years.
