It’s been quite some time since the Detroit Tigers had a bonafide ace leading their rotation, and not only did they have one in 2024, but they also had the Cy Young winner in Tarik Skubal. Meanwhile, in the NL, the Braves have had their fair share of premier arms, but Chris Sale became the first since 1998 to win the award. Now, both of those guys will try to repeat as the Cy Young winner, but that won't be an easy task since both leagues have quite a few high-powered arms like Garrett Crochet and Paul Skenes.

Garrett Crochet (Boston Red Sox): One of the bigger moves this offseason saw Garrett Crochet trade in his white socks for red ones, as he is set to lead the Boston rotation in 2025. The lefty was the lone bright spot in Chicago last season, and now, with some run support behind him, he could post an even better end-of-season stat line. In his first full season as a starter last year, Crochet pitched to a 3.58 ERA with 209 strikeouts and a 2.69 FIP. Crochet started his first Boston tenure with a five inning outing in which he struck out four and allowed two earned runs, and in his most recent outing, he struck out 11 while taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning. Overall, the lefty has 28 strikeouts and a 2.27 FIP in 26 innings.
Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers): Fresh off his first career Cy Young, Skubal unsurprisingly opened as the favorite to repeat in 2025. The Tigers as a franchise are on the up-and-up, which can largely be accredited to their young starting rotation headlined by the lefty. In 2024, Skubal went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA, 228 strikeouts, and a 2.49 FIP, so if he can come close to replicating those numbers, it will be hard for AL pitchers to knock him off the throne. While Skubal allowed seven earned runs through his first two starts this season, he settled in during his third start and still has a 3.52 xFIP and 16 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
Cole Ragans (Kansas City Royals): Outside of drafting Bobby Witt Jr, trading for Cole Ragans was one of the best decisions the Royals franchise has made over the past few years. The young left-hander showed flashes of ace potential in 2023, and in 2024, he proved that it could be a reality as he finished the season with a 3.14 ERA, 2.99 FIP, and 223 strikeouts in 186.1 innings. Through four starts in 2025, Ragans is not slowing down, racking up 34 strikeouts and pitching to a 2.21 xFIP in 23.2 innings.

Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates): Skenes did not open last season in the big leagues, but he still managed to win NL Rookie of the Year and finish third in Cy Young voting. The LSU product has the potential to be one of the best pitchers we've seen, and baseball fans are chomping at the bit to see what he can do in his first full season. In 133 innings in 2024, Skenes finished with a 1.96 ERA, 2.44 FIP, and 170 strikeouts. To start the 2025 season, Skenes racked up 20 strikeouts and is pitching to a 2.25 xFIP over 18.1 innings.
Hunter Greene (Cincinnati Reds): Greene has dealt with injuries for the majority of his young career, but since July of last season, he has been pitching to a sub 1.00 ERA. In four starts and 27.2 innings to start the 2025 season, the hard-throwing righty has 31 strikeouts to go along with a .98 ERA and 1.66 FIP.
Spencer Schwellenbach (Atlanta Braves): The Braves have an impressive ability to find and develop Cy Young-caliber arms. After Spencer Strider burst onto the scene a few years ago, Atlanta now has Spencer Schwellenbach, who is taking the league by storm. Through three starts, Schwellenbach is pitching to a .45 ERA and 2.42 xFIP with 19 strikeouts in 20 innings.

After having a pitcher win the award six times from 1990 to 1998, the Atlanta Braves did not have another Cy Young winner until Chris Sale in 2024.
Prior to 2011, the Detroit Tigers had only two Cy Young winners. Since then, they have had three, including Tarik Skubal in 2024.
Over the past five years, only one Cy Young winner has gone on to pitch in and win the World Series. That player was Justin Verlander for the Astros in 2022.
A player has won the Cy Young award in consecutive seasons 13 times. Tom Glavine and Randy Johnson have both won it four straight years.
