Cale Makar: Coming off a career year, where he recorded 92 points on 62 assists and 30 goals, Cale Makar is now on the hunt for the third Norris Trophy of his career. The Avalanche star increased his scoring last season, especially on the power play, as he recorded 12 power-play goals, which was a new career high. Unsurprisingly, Makar has already started the 2025-26 season on a high note, registering two assists in Colorado's first game.
Quinn Hughes: A Norris Trophy repeat was not in the cards for Hughes last season, as he finished third in voting. An injury was the main reason Hughes couldn't build on his impressive 2023-24 season, as he went from playing 82 games that year to 68 last season. Even with the missed time, Hughes still produced a solid season, finishing tied for ninth in the league with 60 assists.
Zach Werenski: A career year landed Werenski 13 first-place votes for this award last season, as he set career highs in goals (23), assists (59), and points (82). Not only did Werenski set new career highs, but he played over 80 games for just the second time in his career, which lends a lot of optimism to the upcoming season if he can remain healthy.
Unfortunately for the rest of the NHL, Cale Makar has continued to elevate his game. During the 2023-24 season, Makar posted a career-high 90 points with 69 assists and 21 goals. Not to mention, the Avalanche star also recorded a career-high 148 blocks, as his previous career-high was 110, so with numbers like that, it was unsurprising to see him open as the favorite across the board. Throughout the 2024-25 season, that dominance continued as Makar finished with a new career high in points, 92, and ranked eighth in the league with 62 assists.
The elevation of Makar's scoring ability is going to make winning this award incredibly difficult for the rest of the defensemen in the league. Not only were 92 points a new career high, but so were his 30 goals and 12 power-play goals. Not to mention, Makar also finished with the second-best +\- of his career at (+28).
Thus, on June 11, Cale Makar was announced as the recipient of the Norris Trophy 2024-25. The now two-time NHL Best Defenceman Award winner has been a Norris Trophy finalist a total of five times already in just his first six NHL seasons.
