After leading the OKC Thunder to the #1 seed in the Western Conference, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the NBA MVP for the first time in his promising career. While Nikola Jokic made a push to win his fourth MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander was the top scorer in the league and was the focal point of the best team in the league.
Not only is SGA the current favorite to win the NBA Finals MVP, but he is also likely to open as the favorite to win the 2025-26 MVP. Once the odds for that market are released, we will keep NBA bettors up to date on all odds movements from the premier sportsbooks.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC Thunder): The OKC Thunder entered the year with high expectations, and as far as the regular season goes, they lived up to those expectations. Aside from scoring, SGA also averaged 6.4 assists per game and finished the regular season with 4.8 defensive win shares and .309 win shares per 48 minutes, the most he's ever had in a season.

Each NBA MVP voter is different, which means they may value different stats and metrics when it comes to voting. Everyone online and in the media will argue based on PER (Player Efficiency Rating) or similar advanced metrics. Still, at times, those arguments can become oversaturated and miss the stats that some voters are looking for.
Voters and bettors can certainly factor in PER, but ultimately, the stat excludes team success and defensive impact. This is where impact metrics come in, as they are much more valuable to the Most Valuable Player conversation. Stats such as Estimated Plus-Minus (EPM) or on/off stats can help truly separate the candidates.
A guy like Nikola Jokic has greatly benefited from these stats, as they show how valuable he is on both ends of the court. During the 2023-24 season, Jokic led the NBA in EPM, as he had the highest estimated impact on offense per 100 possessions and the second highest defensive impact. If you mix that with the fact that he averaged a triple-double and led his team to 57 wins, he was the clear winner.
By tracking these stats early in the season, bettors may be able to find an edge and narrow the field down significantly, therefore helping determine who has the best value based on price.
