As sports betting has grown, so has the amount of same-game parlays placed. This bet-type allows bettors to focus on one game, and build a parlay from a range of betting markets for that event.
A same-game parlay is a popular betting market that offers bettors the chance to place a parlay strictly from betting markets on one game. With the popularity of this market, plenty of premier sportsbooks put a lot of attention and resources into them. A traditional parlay is the combination of legs from different games or events, but same-game parlays have very specific, yet expansive markets, that bettors can combine into their legs for the parlay.
Depending on the shop a bettor is using this market may have a different name, some of which include a bet builder, one-game parlay, and SGP. Additionally, in shops like FanDuel and DraftKings, bettors can utilize an SGP+ or SGPx, which allows customers to combine multiple same-game parlays into one parlay.
While some betting markets for same-game parlays can be straight bets like moneylines or totals, most markets offered for them are very specific and cannot be made as a straight wager. As long as a bettor stays within the SGP markets laid out by a sportsbook they can make the parlay as big or small as they want whether it be two legs or ten. Of course, no matter how many legs the bet builder is, all of them must hit for the parlay to be paid out.
Many sportsbooks like to offer promotions that encourage the creation of same-game parlays, but it is important to always check the terms and conditions of those promos, as many of them may have odds requirements or maximum winning restrictions that bettors may not run into when creating an SGP not related to a promotion.
Building a same-game parlay is a bit different than putting together a regular parlay. On most US betting applications, same game parlays can only be created from specific betting markets, which are typically labeled as such. The process of finding the SGP markets may vary based on the app, but once those markets are found, bettors can only build their parlay within that section of markets.
At this point, every major sportsbook offers same game parlays, and most of them cater a lot of their promos to that bet type. One of the biggest reasons that creating SGP’s on shops like FanDuel, Caesars, Bet365, and DraftKings is so appealing to bettors is because the markets available are a lot more extensive than the markets offered for straight bets or regular parlays.
Each of those aforementioned sportsbooks and a lot of other shops will not accept a same game parlay if it is not made from the SGP tab, so bettors need to ensure they are using the proper markets to avoid having their wager denied.
Bet365 is known for having some of the most extensive same-game parlay markets available across any sport. To access these markets, bettors just need to find the game they are looking for, and once they select it, they’ll be able to see the “Same Game Parlay” tab at the top of the screen. Once that tab is entered, bettors will find a very well-organized page of SGP markets that includes milestone bets, over/unders, and even quarter-specific bets depending on the sport.
Browse the app or website for a specific game or event.
Select that event and click on the “Same Game Parlay” tab.
Filter through the wide selection of markets and add legs to the parlay.
Max of 12 legs can be added to an SGP on Bet365
Enter a wager amount, and if applicable, select a promotion in the bet slip before entering the bet.
FanDuel puts a lot of emphasis on same-game parlays, as many of their promos encourage bettors to make them. Each game listed on FanDuel will have a same-game parlay tab, which lists every market available. Some markets available for SGP’s may be available for straight bets, while others are specific to just same game parlays. FanDuel typically offers more SGP markets than any other sportsbook, so the options can be limitless.
By clicking on the same game parlay tab for any game or event, it makes the process of formulating one very easy on bettors.
Find a game or event to bet on.
Select the Same Game Parlay tab for that game or event.
Scroll through all the available markets and start adding legs to the parlay.
Once finished, enter a wager amount select a promo offer, if available, and place the bet.
DraftKings makes it very easy for bettors to find and create a same game parlay. When a bettor finds a game they want to wager on and select it, they will find a tab at the top of the screen that says “Click here to enable SGP.” Once that option is chosen, the bettor will only be able to see the wide range of markets that can be used to build an SGP.
These markets will usually include the straightforward markets that can be found when looking to make a straight bet, and also more specific markets, like milestones. For example, in a non-SGP setting, a bettor can take the over-under on a player's receiving yards, or maybe to surpass 50+ receiving yards, but with SGP markets, a bettor may be able to find eight to ten bets they can make for a player and his receiving yards.
Locate a game or event to focus on.
Select that game.
Click on “Enable SGP.”
Filter through all available markets and select at least two legs to add to the parlay.
Enter a wager amount and place the bet.
It can be incredibly easy to get carried away with parlays, as the potential payouts always look appealing before placing the bet. Whether it is a parlay or a same-game parlay, a $10 bet on (+3000) odds is going to payout $300. For as appealing as that is, to reach (+3000) odds on a parlay, a better either needs to add a large number of legs, or they need to add legs that already have plus money odds.
Neither of those strategies is good for long-term sports betting success. A bettor can always mix in a long shot parlay with minimum stake, but for bettors looking to stack winning bets, in specific winning SGPs, there are a few things they should be considering.
For starters, there is nothing wrong with keeping it small. Adding three well-researched legs to an SGP and wagering a half unit or one full unit is going to go a lot longer than blowing a full unit on a ten-leg parlay that is just full of unresearched legs.
A bettor can research SGP legs in several ways, but one of the best ways to craft an SGP is by looking for correlations among the legs. For example, the Philadelphia Phillies could be facing a left-handed starter one night. In that case, a bettor could bet two hitters who hit lefties well to go over (.5) total bases and they could take that lefty starter to allow over 4.5 total hits for the game. It may take more research to find angles like this, but in the long run, the odds and payout could be worth it.
If a bettor tries to same game parlay markets for a traditional parlay, they will be unable to place that bet. The biggest for this is that sportsbooks calculate parlay odds differently than they do same-game parlay odds. For example, if a bettor took the Eagles (-2.5)(-110) and the Packers (-10)(-110) and parlayed them on DraftKings, the odds would be (+264).
Now, if that same bettor created a same game parlay for a different NFL game and took the Cardinals (-4.5)(-110) and the under of 42.5 at (-110), the odds of that SGP come out to (+254) on DraftKings. Ultimately, this shows how sportsbooks think same-game parlays should be priced based on factors like correlation within a game or based on what that sportsbooks’ specific algorithms are telling them.
Of course, this does not mean that bettors shouldn’t build same-game parlays at all, but instead, it shows that they should be ensuring that the bet has value when made as an SGP. Like with any wager, a bettor should always be considering all angles, and no matter what type of bet they are trying to place, they should also be practicing good bankroll management.
A parlay in the NFL could be as simple as taking three moneyline favorites for a given slate. Now, a same-game parlay could be much more intricate, like the one listed below:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-7.5)(-110)
Baker Mayfield 275+ Passing Yards (+125)
Cade Otton 50+ Receiving Yards (+110)
Jalen Coker Under 2.5 Receptions (-200)
Chubba Hubbard To Score a Touchdown (+115)
Put together into a same-game parlay this bet would have final odds of (+2809), which would result in a $280.90 payout on a $10 wager if all the legs were to hit.
Bettors can build a same-game parlay by stacking bets from different markets within one game. The more legs the bettor adds, the higher the odds will be.
A traditional or regular parlay can span across a wide range of games, events, or betting markets. On the flip side, a bet builder is a parlay that is specific to one game and markets designed for that game.
This answer fully depends on how the bettor approaches the market. A well-researched SGp with correlated legs could be a good idea. A long-shot ten-leg SGP is generally a bad idea.
We always recommend researching each leg that will be going into a bet builder, while also trying to make the legs somewhat correlated. Of course, bankroll management is also a key piece of the puzzle.
