When heading into a major tournament like the US Open, most bettors consider recent form, surface preference, and a few other factors to find value in the futures markets. All of those factors are certainly important, but one underrated factor when looking to place a future is the draw, specifically, which quarter of the bracket a top player is placed in.
Some top players may be great on hard courts, but a brutal draw can stop their ascension to a title before it gains any steam. Certain players may receive a favorable draw, while others may end up in a quarter of the bracket that features young unseeded floaters, veterans with good history at the US Open, or in-form players with no expectations on them.
In a tournament where the five-set format is a real test of a player's stamina, playing young and aggressive baseliners early could lead to a player dealing with fatigue before the quarter or semi-finals even roll around.
Smart bettors typically wait to place most futures until the draw is released. This allows them to target undervalued players in weaker quarters, which not only provides value but also offers good hedging opportunities later in the tournament.
