One week remains in the NFL regular season, and there are three teams in the mix for the final playoff spot in the AFC. The Denver Broncos had the chance to secure that spot on Saturday, but their overtime loss to the Bengals kept both Cincinnati and Miami alive. While the Broncos' loss also kept the Colts alive, they went ahead and eliminated themselves by losing to the Giants.
Despite losing in week 17, the Broncos still have the best chance of sneaking into the postseason. All Denver has to do is win and their in. To make matters better, Denver will be playing a Chiefs team that will be resting Patrick Mahomes and will instead be starting Carson Wentz. Now, if Denver loses, and the Dolphins beat the Jets then Miami would claim that final spot.
Despite arguably having the best offense out of all the teams in this position, the Cincinnati Bengals will need to beat the Steelers on Saturday night, and then root for both the Broncos and Dolphins to lose in week 18. Meanwhile, in the NFC, the final playoff spot is a lot less complicated, as the Buccaneers can secure it win a win over the Saints, while the Falcons will need to beat the Panthers and have the Buccaneers lose to claim that final spot.
Heading into week 16, three playoff spots remain in the AFC, and four remain in the NFC. The Steelers and Texans became the latest teams to secure a spot in the postseason, as Houston claimed the AFC South title, while Pittsburgh got in despite losing in week 15 to the Eagles.
While chaos could arise in the AFC regarding the final playoff spot, the NFC remains the most chaotic conference down the stretch. As it stands, three teams in the NFC are on the outside looking in but will have 15% or better of making the playoffs if they win this weekend. Of the three teams, the Seahawks stand to gain the most with a win in week 16, as their chances will go from 35% to 51%.
