Becoming a World Series champion is the goal for all MLB teams, but winning a pennant is nothing to brush off. Before teams can fight for a World Series ring, they must first complete the pennant in their respective league, which is another bragging point for fans arguing which franchise is historically better. In 2024, two powerhouse franchises returned to the top as the Yankees and Dodgers broke through to the World Series.
Both teams opened as the favorites to win their respective league in 2025, and with the season entering the second half, we’ll look at the updated odds for each team to win the AL or NL across all the top sportsbooks in Arizona.

Detroit Tigers: The Tigers burst onto the scene last season and proved they have the potential to be a contender for years to come. Behind a strong rotation led by 2024 Cy Young Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, who is on a career resurgence, the Tigers' pitching staff has the sixth-lowest xFIP in the league this season. Meanwhile, players like Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene, and Kerry Carpenter have contributed to Detroit's offense, which ranks eighth in home runs and sixth in OPS.
New York Yankees: Strong fundamentals were not a consistent aspect of the Yankees' play in 2024, and although they reached the World Series for the first time since 2009, those fundamental mistakes ultimately proved their downfall. While injuries have already started piling up for New York this season, they certainly still have the talent to return to the Fall Classic. After a strong start to the season, the Yankees' play began to level out in June, as they lost their division lead. While the Yankees are still looking for more consistency from their bullpen and fielding, their starters have a 3.80 xFIP on the year.
Houston Astros: Just like last season, the Houston Astros got off to a slow start. However, Houston has since kicked into gear and has taken a strong lead in the AL West as the season approaches the All-Star break. The Astros have been one of the most dominant teams at home to date, boasting a 33-19 record. While they've struggled a bit on the road, Houston remains 9th in OPS, and their pitching staff boasts the 5th-lowest ERA.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The reigning World Series champions returned a ton of crucial pieces for the 2025 season, and to make things even better, Shohei Ohtani is back on the mound after he put up an MVP season at DH. LA has always been one of the biggest spenders in the offseason, and this year was no different. With a good mix of returning players and new acquisitions, LA is 2nd in OPS and 1st in xwOBA, while their pitching staff, led by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, is 8th in strikeout percentage.
Philadelphia Phillies: Talent-wise, the Phillies can stack up with any pitching staff or lineup in the league. With plenty of power riddled throughout the lineup, Philadelphia has started the season with the 12th-best OPS in the league. Meanwhile, on the mound, behind guys like Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez, and Christopher Sanchez, the Phillies pitchers are ranked 3rd in xSLG and 2nd in strikeouts, which has helped them build a slight lead over the Mets in the NL East.
New York Mets: The Mets surprised everyone last season by reaching the NLCS, and they have since surprised everyone again by outbidding the Yankees for Juan Soto. With Soto in the mix, the Mets have one of the better lineups in baseball. While Soto is a good start in terms of putting them on a good path for another NLCS appearance, the Mets did not look like a playoff team during June, and while they steadied themselves a bit in early July, they are still behind the Phillies in the division.
